Product seeding
A compensation model where creators receive free product instead of (or in addition to) cash.
Also known as: Seeding · PR mailers · Product gifting
Product seeding sends free product to creators with the intent of generating organic posts, reviews, and on-platform UGC. It is the dominant compensation model in beauty and fashion D2C and a meaningful one in food and home.
When seeding works
- The product is genuinely useful or desirable to the creator.
- The brand is comfortable with no guaranteed-post commitment.
- Attribution can still capture downstream conversions (per-creator promo + tag).
When it doesn't
- High-cost categories where free product alone doesn't motivate quality content.
- Programs where finance needs to forecast post volume against spend.
- Markets where regulators require explicit gifting disclosure (now most of EU + LATAM).
A Creator Commerce OS treats seeding as a first-class compensation model — products ship via 3PL with creator-specific tracking, and downstream conversions roll up into attributed revenue per creator.
